Apple bought Mayday – AI calendar could be coming to iOS 19

Europe recently released a list of technology acquisitions, including Apple’s purchase of Mayday Labs Inc. in April 2024. Although the company’s website is still up and running, the Mayday app itself was shut down on May 1, 2024.

What was Mayday good at?

Mayday was a smart AI calendar for iPhone, iPad and Mac that combined the functions of a calendar, task manager and scheduling assistant. The app learned from the user – remembering their preferences, analyzing schedule patterns, and automatically selecting the best time for tasks and appointments.

  • Automatic scheduling based on event duration and time window;
  • Suggestions for team meetings without looking at other people’s calendars;
  • One-touch rescheduling;
  • Automatic adaptation of the schedule to new conditions.

What does this mean for iOS 19?

It’s been a year since Mayday closed and Apple bought it. Given that it came too late to be implemented in iOS 18 last year, in iOS 19 we may well see Mayday’s AI features right in Apple’s standard Calendar.

The company is known to often make low-profile purchases for the sake of technology – the 2012 acquisition of AuthenTec, which brought Touch ID a year later, is a case in point.

When to expect an announcement?

It’s likely that as soon as June 9 at WWDC 2025, when Apple unveils iOS 19, we’ll find out what features from Mayday made their way to the system. According to rumors, Apple will focus on AI innovation – and a smart calendar could very well be part of that strategy.

What if it doesn’t?”

Although the likelihood of Mayday not using Mayday’s technology is slim, it can’t be ruled out completely. But if Apple has already made such a purchase, it’s logical to assume that it plans to use it.
