OpenAI has launched a competitor to Tik-Tok

OpenAI on Tuesday announced the launch of Sora 2, a new audio and video generation model that is a follow-up to last year’s Sora. Along with it, OpenAI introduced Sora, a social app that allows users to create and share videos in an algorithmic feed reminiscent of TikTok.
Although the app is still available by invitation only and we weren’t able to test it, OpenAI shared impressive demonstrations of Sora 2’s capabilities. The model better accounts for the laws of physics, making videos more realistic. The provided clips show scenes such as playing beach volleyball, skateboarding tricks, gymnastic exercises, and jumping off a ski jump.

OpenAI notes that previous video models were flawed : objects transformed and distorted reality for the sake of matching a text query. For example, if a basketball player missed a shot, the ball would “teleport” directly into the hoop. In Sora 2, by contrast, the ball bounces off the backboard if a miss occurs.
The app features a “cameo” function – uploading video and audio of the user, allowing you to insert your own image into generated scenes. You can also share your “cameos” with friends and let them use the image in collaborative videos.

The Sora app for iOS is already available for download in the U.S. and Canada, and OpenAI plans to expand access to other countries. For now, the social platform is available by invitation, but ChatGPT Pro users can test out the Sora 2 Pro version without an invitation.
After creation, videos can be published to feeds similar to TikTok, Instagram* Reels and other short video formats. However, competition in this segment is growing: for example, Meta* recently added “Vibes,” an AI video feed focused on entertainment content, to its Meta* AI app.
OpenAI takes into account users’ activity on the Sora app, their IP location, posting history, and ChatGPT correspondence to generate recommendations. You can turn off the personalization feature. The app also implements parental controls with the ability to limit infinite scrolling and private message management. However, the effectiveness of these tools depends on the technical literacy of parents.
At launch, Sora will be free to maximize user adoption and allow users to explore the platform’s capabilities. The only monetization envisioned is a fee for creating additional videos during periods of high demand.

The launch of the social platform presents OpenAI with important challenges in keeping users safe. The ability to use other people’s images without consent and the creation of manipulative content remain significant challenges for the industry. Users can revoke permission to use their image, but the risk of abuse remains. At the moment, regulation and legislation in this area is in its infancy.
