OpenAI postpones the launch of the Open-Weights model

The CEO of OpenAI has hinted that something very exciting is in store for us soon, which should justify delaying the release of the Open-Weights model.
OpenAI already has a reputation when it comes to timing: delays, changes of plans, it’s not new. And now the deadlines are being pushed back again. But perhaps for good reason.
Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, said in a post on X that the release of the open-web model has been delayed. He confirmed that the release is expected this summer, but not in June. However, he mentioned that the team had done «something unexpected» and hinted that the wait would be worth it, without revealing additional details.
OpenAI has long been teasing the public with its new open-weights model, which was originally scheduled to be released in early summer. According to the company, the new model will have similar reasoning abilities to the «o-series» models, but will be available to everyone.
Open-weighted models are AI systems whose parameters are open to download and use. This means that companies and individual developers will be able to use off-the-shelf models without having to learn from scratch.
Altman didn’t specify a specific reason for the delay, but it’s clear from what he said that it was due to something positive and unexpected.
In the meantime, the AI market is becoming increasingly saturated, including the open-weighted model segment. OpenAI has some strong competitors: Mistral has already introduced its line of models with reasoning capabilities, and Deepseek, Microsoft, and Google are also actively developing.
Many are also eagerly awaiting the release of GPT-5, the next version of ChatGPT. There is no official launch date yet, but analysts speculate that the update could be released in the coming months, probably in July. The release was originally expected in May, but that didn’t happen. And by the looks of it, June is also unlikely to be the release month.
