Apple will open CarPlay to third-party AI assistants
Apple plans to allow third-party AI voice assistants to integrate with its CarPlay platform. According to Bloomberg, this change will enable developers like OpenAI and Google to offer embedded versions of ChatGPT and Gemini for hands-free control through the car interface-although with one major caveat: these assistants won’t replace Siri as the system default.
The new functionality targets complex queries that go beyond Siri’s usual scope, such as analyzing long documents, creative tasks, or specialized professional advice while driving. However, Apple’s architecture will keep its native assistant front and center: the Siri activation button on the steering wheel or within CarPlay won’t change, and third-party assistants will not be triggered by wake words like “Hey Google” or “Okay ChatGPT.” Instead, users will need to manually launch these apps to access their features.
Apple is also preparing a major Siri overhaul powered by Google’s Gemini technology, as part of their earlier partnership. This revamped, “hybrid” Siri aims to become a contextual AI agent capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks. Apple envisions this evolved Siri as the primary interface within CarPlay, while third-party AI apps will serve as specialized tools for niche use cases.
Technically, the integration could arrive with the upcoming CarPlay Next Generation update, slated for release in 2024 and gradually rolling out across carmakers. This new platform supports deep integration with vehicle systems, including digital instrument clusters and climate controls, making the addition of third-party AI services a logical extension for enhanced functionality.
