The Evolution Championship Series tournament, colloquially referred to as Evo 2024, took place this weekend and was the biggest fighting game tournament of the year. As a consequence, many fighting game developers made exciting announcements. These ranged from brand new games to DLC characters that will appear in beloved fighting games, including unexpected new fighters. If you’re wondering what you missed this past weekend, here are the most significant announcements from the event.

SNK: SNK vs. Capcom

The developer of King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown — SNK — was loud at EVO 2024. It unveiled SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos — a re-release of the classic crossover fighting game with online play and netcode rollback — for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.

SNK talked about its future in fighting games and even other genres. During an appearance at Evo 2024, the developers confirmed that they are working on the first new Art of Fighting game since 1996’s Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior. The company is also creating an RPG in the universe of the Samurai Shodown series. And while the latter is not a fighting game, it’s clear that we’re about to see some kind of SNK rebirth.

Arc System Works: Cyberpunk crossover Guilty Gear Strive

Arc System Works — another leading fighting game developer, and it has made several announcements. The most shocking of these was that Guilty Gear Strive will be a crossover with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in 2025, with Lucy from the Netflix anime coming to Strive as a guest character. Queen Dizzy, Venom and Unika — are the other fighters that will be in the Guilty Gear Season 4 season pass. The pass will also include new stages and a Team of 3 mode for the game. And now we have a trailer of Uzuka, the next fighter to appear in Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes on July 25.

Bandai Namco Entertainment: Heihachi Mishima is on the way

Tekken 8 — another iconic Evo 2024 game, and there were quite a few announcements made at the event. It is now known that the iconic character Heihachi Mishima will appear in Tekken 8 as a DLC character this fall. His release will also come with a free chapter of story mode. Tekken 8 will also feature Nike-branded content in the fall.

So far, Tekken 8 will also be getting some Nike-branded content.

WB Games: MultiVersus Season 2 adds ranked mode

The second season of WB Games’ crossover fighting game MultiVersus kicks off on July 23, and developers Player First Games have given us a detailed look at what to expect from it. Speaking of new characters, Samurai Jack will be joining as the second season kicks off. Beetlejuice will appear in this season ahead of the movie release of the movie of the same name. The new season will also feature a scene based on the Warner Bros. water tower. Finally, on July 23, MultiVersus will introduce Ranked Mode, which will support 1v1 and 2v2 matches.

Cygames: The next Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising DLC character

Cygames also showed up at Evo 2024 to talk about the next DLC character for fighting game Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. It’s a “fusion of divine and mortal” named Versusia. The new fighter will arrive on August 20 along with the Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising version 1.50 update, which will bring the game’s Grand Bruise! mode, another online lobby mini-game, a new stage, a grandmaster rank, new story episodes, balance adjustments, and more.

Riot Games: 2XKO will allow players to get fighters as they play

At Evo 2024, 2XKO was playable, and Riot Games streamed live gameplay every day. There were no major announcements like a release date, but we got a much clearer idea of what 2XKO looks like in action. Riot Games also confirmed that all of 2XKO’s characters will be earned in-game, and showed off a Dynasty skin for Ahri. Game director Sean Rivera also confirmed that there are no plans to add crossover fighters to 2XKO at this time.

Indie: Rivals 2 and Diesel Legacy revealed new fighters

Some indie fighting games also appeared Evo 2024 to be in the spotlight. Aether Studios announced that Orkein will be one of 10 characters available in Rivals 2’s launch roster. All fighters will be free-to-play after launch. Maximum Entertainment introduced Damkina as a new character in the 2v2 fighting game Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age.
