Samsung Galaxy Ring: news, price, release date and more

The smart ring market has so far been dominated by the Oura Ring, but that’s about to change with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Ring. The ring was first unveiled at the Unpacked 2024 event in January, and then at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.

The Oura Ring is a smart ring that will be available at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show.

The Galaxy Ring is expected to be equipped with a variety of health sensors to help users track their fitness and daily activity, all backed by Samsung Health. It’s one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and here’s everything we know about it so far.

Price

Not much is known about the Galaxy Ring’s pricing yet. However, one rumor suggests that the company has no plans to lower prices. This suggests that the Galaxy Ring will cost around $300 in the US, which is the same price as the Oura Ring. Other smart rings, such as the Ultrahuman Ring Air and the RingConn Smart Ring, have similar prices — $349 and $279, respectively.

One area in which Samsung may surpass Oura, — is the lack of subscription fees. As a reminder, a subscription to Oura Ring is $6 per month. The South Korean company currently has no subscription for the Galaxy Watch. Some rumors suggest that the Galaxy Ring could change that, but we hope that’s not the case.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: design

A lot more is known about the Galaxy Ring’s design, as some samples were shown at MWC. Samsung is expected to sell models in at least three colors: black, silver and gold, each with a glossy reflective coating. It was previously revealed that Samsung will offer the rings in a variety of sizes — from 5 to 13.

Digital Trends editor Joe Maring expressed hope that more Galaxy Ring designs will be released, including models with additional finishes and colors. He also noted the lack of an indicator on the outside of the ring to help users determine how best to wear it.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: Health Tracking Features

Samsung Galaxy Ring

According to the latest information, the upcoming Galaxy Ring could offer several features to track users’ health and well-being. A new Samsung patent discovered by Wareable indicates that the company is looking to use a generative artificial intelligence system to continuously monitor heart rate and signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Currently, most smartwatches monitor heart rate data using electrocardiogram (ECG) scans, but this is not continuous monitoring because the user needs to actively trigger the scan.

This is set to change thanks to a new Samsung patent that allows «translation of PPG signals into corresponding ECG waveforms». Essentially, Samsung is taking the continuous data it already collects and using artificial intelligence to translate it into ECG data. This feature could appear not only in the Galaxy Ring, but also in older models of wearable devices with ECG functionality, such as the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3.

Among other expected features — «My Vitality Score» which is expected to provide users with a comprehensive snapshot of their overall health based on key metrics such as sleep, activity, heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). The metric is similar to Oura’s popular «Readiness» metric, which users have praised for its accuracy and usefulness.

In addition to My Vitality Score, Galaxy Ring is also expected to track sleep to help users understand the quality and duration of sleep each night. This feature will be useful for those who are having trouble sleeping or want to optimize their sleep patterns for better health.

Another interesting feature of the Galaxy Ring — cycle tracking, made possible by Samsung’s partnership with Natural Cycles. This feature will help users track their menstrual cycles and fertility, allowing them to better understand their bodies and plan accordingly.

This is all in line with what we expect from a smart ring in 2024. It’s possible Samsung will have even more health features, but at least for now, it looks like all the basic features have already been realized.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: battery life

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Ring will have remarkable battery life. The large size is expected to provide «long» battery life, which isn’t surprising given the Oura Ring’s impressive battery life.

In late February, Samsung confirmed in an interview that the Galaxy Ring will last between five and nine days. By comparison — the Oura Ring can last up to four days without charging. If Samsung achieves more than a week of battery life for the Galaxy Ring, we’ll be impressed.”

Galaxy Ring: What’s special?

We have yet to learn about any distinctive feature that will set the Galaxy Ring apart from other devices on the market. We hope Samsung will come up with something innovative and unique to stand out, especially when the smart ring market is getting more and more crowded. It’s rumored that the new Oura Ring will include features like age and cardiovascular power measurement, so the company will have to work harder to compete.

Samsung can accomplish this in a number of ways. Its claims about battery life are worth paying attention to. The company also has an opportunity to make the Galaxy Ring a more affordable smart ring option, whether through a lower price and/or no subscription.
