Silent Hill 2 remake: release date, trailers, gameplay and more

Rumors of a Silent Hill 2 remake have faded into oblivion, and now it’s already a reality. The classic game is considered one of the best horror games of all time, and now it’s getting a full remake. Unlike the disappointment that was the HD Collection, the game will be completely recreated from the ground up for modern platforms. Still, considering the game is so beloved and Konami’s business has not been going well in recent years, fans may fear rather than rejoice at this announcement. But we’ll only know the final result of such a long effort when we get to play it.

Besides a new graphical update, remakes can mean a lot of different things. In the case of Silent Hill 2, the question of what exactly will — and, more importantly, won—t — be changed is of concern to the devoted fans who hold the original in such high regard. While Konami hasn’t fully cleared the fog as to what Silent Hill 2 will be like this time around, we’ve turned up the radios, checked all the locked doors and managed to bring out everything you need to know about the Silent Hill 2 remake.

The Silent Hill 2 remake was introduced as a true current-gen exclusive and a console exclusive for PlayStation and PC.

Trailers

The announcement trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake is technically a teaser, as it doesn’t feature any actual gameplay footage, but it still gives a glimpse of the creepy town of Silent Hill.

It starts in the same dingy bathroom as the original game, only this time James looks much more distraught. He looks at himself in the mirror and asks himself if Mary can really be there waiting for him, knowing that she already passed away from “that damn disease three years ago.”

He’s not sure if Mary is really there to wait for him.

James walks outside, passes the familiar map of the city outside the diner and heads down the street when Mary’s voice comes on with the iconic line, “In my troubled dreams, I see this town. Silent Hill.”

We see a disturbing scene in which James sees Pyramidhead in the apartment for the first time. He also sees Laura outside the hospital.

And he sees Laura outside the hospital.

The new footage of James attacking a nurse lasts only a moment, but it may indicate additional scenes. Before the credits fade out, we see James and Maria meeting, as well as Pyramidhead coming out of the rain.

Much more information has come to light thanks to a post on the PlayStation Blog from Konami producer Motoi Okamoto and creative director and lead designer Bloober Team. The trailer already mentioned that Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka, designer and composer of the original game, will be joining Bloober Team in developing the remake. Many credit the success of the original game as a lasting horror masterpiece to the original Team Silent, so the involvement of the two of these men might appease some fans a bit.

The Bloober Team’s main goal in creating the Silent Hill 2 remake — “to retain the atmosphere that created Silent Hill 2 while modernizing many aspects of the game’s gameplay.

Although they don’t mention exactly how they will or won’t change the story, that’s probably the part that most fans are interested in. While some of the footage appears to be new, it will be worth the wait to see if there will actually be significant changes.

The trailer for the movie’s release date focuses on James and Angela and recreates a few of their encounters. While the staging and camerawork are different, for the most part, everything remains true to the original.

The story trailer focuses on a key scene with Mary in a prison cell delivering a short monologue, as well as Mary reading her letter to James. Along with the other actors and some research, we also see Eddie for the first time. Those familiar with the original may pick up on a few interesting pass-hacks here, but otherwise the game is spoiler-free for newcomers.

The game’s story is also a bit of a treat for newcomers.

Gameplay

The first trailer didn’t show any gameplay, but, again, the blog sheds some light on how they were going to modernize Silent Hill 2 until we got a full gameplay trailer.

The original Silent Hill 2 used a semi-fixed camera that tracked the hero, and panned as you moved quickly around the map. You had some control over the camera, but it was mostly designed to show objects in a certain way.

A lot of it was just to show you things in a certain way.

In the Silent Hill 2 remake, the team has decided to switch to a more traditional third-person, over-the-shoulder shooting style, similar to how the Resident Evil 2 Remake abandoned the original’s fixed cameras. This change is intended to make the game more immersive.

The original had a clunky (perhaps intentionally) melee and weapon combat system. Based on what’s already in place, there will be more options and fluidity in combat, such as dodging and the ability to change weapons on the fly.

The changes are designed to make the game more immersive.

The team also notes that the Silent Hill 2 remake will run on the Unreal Engine 5 engine, and highlights the Lumen and Nanite features. Lumen — is a dynamic lighting system that forces light to interact realistically with the environment to make the lighting more natural. Nanite, on the other hand, is used to create highly detailed environments.

Since the game is exclusive to the PS5 console, there will also be features that take advantage of that particular hardware. For example, 3D sound as a way to immerse players in the atmosphere of the city.

The full Combat Reveal trailer finally showed the game in action. James will be performing heavy, deliberate strikes from a new third-person perspective. It turns out the shooting doesn’t have an aiming reticle screen, but is otherwise very reminiscent of Resident Evil 2 Remake’s system.
