What will be shown at Google I/O 2023: the most interesting things

It’s time for the biggest event of the year for Google — the annual I/O developer conference. This year, we’ll see at least two smartphone announcements, the Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold, as well as the official introduction of Android 14, details about the Pixel Tablet and possibly some information about the Pixel 8 series.

The Google I/O kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time (8 p.m. Moscow time) on Wednesday, May 10, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. And, as usual, it will be streamed on YouTube. Much of the intrigue surrounding the new devices was, as is often the case, already gone thanks to numerous leaks. But we still can’t wait to see if there will be any surprise announcements on stage. Here’s a rundown of what to expect at I/O 2023.

Google Android 14

Google I/O is essentially a developer conference, so it’s only right that we start with the next iteration of Android. Android 14 will focus on improvements and improved security. Based on information provided in developer previews and two betas, Android 14 will offer optimized resource management, improved support for tablets and foldable devices, and more accessibility features. We can also expect more personalization options based on the Material You design.

In terms of security, Android 14 will block installation/downloading of older Android apps developed before Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Google is also introducing system-level security enhancements, including runtime receivers and dynamic read-only code loading to prevent any possibility of code injection. Credential manager and Passkey support are also included to simplify user authentication and password management.

In Android 14 there will be an option to share your favorite photos and videos with apps, as well as an option to opt out entirely. Users will also get a back arrow for easier navigation with color and theme. Direct Share prompt in Android 14 will offer improved direct sharing goals that should be more helpful to users.

On stage, Google will reveal even more user-centric features of Android 14, and judging by the roadmap, a consumer-ready version will arrive around August/September.

Google Pixel Fold

Google’s first foray into the world of foldable phones is finally coming with the announcement of the Pixel Fold. The Pixel Fold is rumored to have a design similar to the Oppo Find N and Find N2, with a 7.6-inch landscape-format inner screen. The main panel is expected to be OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and noticeable bezels. The cover display will reportedly be 5.8 inches. The Pixel Fold is rumored to measure 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7 mm (8.3 mm including the bulging back camera).

We’re expecting Google’s Tensor G2 chipset, as well as two 12MP camera sensors on the back and two 8MP front modules for the main and cover screens. The Pixel Fold will reportedly go on sale in the U.S. for $1,799 and will go on public sale on June 27.

Google Pixel 7a

Pixel 7a is one of the most declassified devices in last time, so we have a pretty clear idea of what to expect. Essentially, the Pixel 7a will be a slightly scaled-down version of the standard Pixel 7 with some reduction in camera costs and device materials.

Rumors point to a 6.1-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate. The phone is expected to get the same Tensor G2 as the other two Pixel 7 phones, as well as 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The back of the Pixel 7a will feature a dual camera with a 64MP primary camera and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle module. On the front, a 13MP front-facing module is expected. We will likely see a 4,300mAh battery with 18W wired charging and wireless charging, which will be a first for the Pixel A series.

The Pixel 7a is expected to cost $499 in the U.S., and it has already been confirmed that the phone will be available starting May 11 in India and hopefully in other regions.

Google Pixel Tablet

The Pixel Tablet was first shown at last year’s Google I/O conference and then again at the Pixel 7 launch in October, so we can expect it to be official this time.

It’s expected to feature an 11-inch LCD screen with 1600 x 2560px resolution, a premium design, and a Tensor G2 chipset. Google wants the Pixel Tablet to have multiple uses, so it will also release the Charging Speaker Dock, which will turn the tablet into a smart speaker/device Nest Hub. We’ve also seen rumors that the Pixel Tablet will support stylus input and 18W wireless charging.

What else: Pixel 8 teaser, Pixel Watch 2, new Pixel Buds

As with past Google events, we can see firsthand information and teasers for the next-generation Pixel phone, the Pixel 8 series, as well as information about the Pixel Watch 2 and the new Pixel Buds headphones. Gadgets aside, we also expect new AI announcements from Google with official introduction of Bard, a CharGPT competitor.
