Tropico 6 Going Viral review: from dictator to doctor

Tropico 6 Going Viral review: from dictator to doctor

Tropico 6 without add-ons was a deep city-building simulator with bright humor and a recognizable style. In the game you had to build dwellings, develop city infrastructure and services, educate people, trade with the world, etc. In parallel, you often had to cheat at elections, rig the votes and even eliminate people dangerous to El Presidente. All in all, there is a lot of fun in the tittle.

The only catch: Tropico 6’s economic system seemed complicated and confusing, making it difficult to get through the first dozen hours of gameplay. But if you’ve made it past that point and are now increasing your economic stats like you’re cracking nuts, you might want to consider DLC. In this review, I’ll be taking a look at Tropico 6 Going Viral. The new pandemic threat is now on a Caribbean virtual island!”

What is the Tropico 6 Going Viral add-on about?

The DLC synopsis is this: El Presidente and his utopian Caribbean world face a problem — new diseases are coming that could lead to a pandemic. There will be 4 kinds of them, and all of them are deadly. The population is worried, building conspiracy theories and going crazy, and you need to solve all the difficulties that arise. Developing a vaccine, creating individual defenses and juggling opinions and panic — the game again gives you the freedom to act as president.

And you’ll have a lot to do.

This addition expands the game’s already wide scope of possibilities. But first things first.

Features of the add-on

The Tropico 6 Going Viral DLC includes the following features:

  • There’s a cure to be found: 4 different diseases are affecting the islands and disrupting the lives of citizens. Some may seriously harm the population and cause a pandemic threat, others may be a mild cough… The main thing is to keep a close eye on the situation.
  • Manage the situation and keep everything under control in the four campaign missions or fight disease on the new multiplayer map. The new missions will make you use the maximum of presidential abilities, but the new multiplayer map, unfortunately, could not be tried all for the same reason — there is no online.
  • And the new map of multiplayer, unfortunately, could not try all for the same reason — there is no online.
  • A new parameter «Panic» is added to the game. It shows how the population treats the disease. Quite logically, and this parameter can be controlled. The addition gives the opportunity to «keep calm» in front of a deadly threat, if you need to continue to steadily increase the economy while you can. Or vice versa, to issue strong new decrees while the people are more concerned about their health.
  • Mentioning the new decrees, it is important to say: there are 16 of them, and they will be unlocked as «Panic» grows. Thanks to them, you can also control this figure or use it to your advantage to develop the island… or your capital.
      • The add-on brings new 9 quests and buildings: huge hospitals, medical checkpoints, healing howitzers, etc. All this allows you to manage the disease and its progress.
      • A new character appears — a quack who will offer to defeat the disease in Ambrosius’ Magic Hut. Tropico 6 Going Viral is in no way inferior in humor to the base game.
      • At last, there are new cosmetic accessories in the game. The plague doctor mask for El Presidente and the medical-themed palace cladding are nice little additions with new properties.

      What’s the bottom line?

For the most part, the add-on doesn’t deepen or fix the basic gameplay, but expands it. New builds, stats, and diseases provide good variety for those who have had enough of the regular games. If the base game seems too easy, or if you’ve completed all the missions and had your fill of Sandbox, Tropico 6 Going Viral is a good way to spend more time playing a good game.
