Google announces a major update to the Gemini app

Google continues to gradually improve the Gemini app for Android to make it more user-friendly. However, despite these small updates, the app still has room to grow — especially considering the capabilities of Gemini itself. Fortunately, Google recognizes that Gemini’s interface, both in the browser and on mobile devices, needs some serious tweaking, and is actively working on it.

In response to an X post criticizing Gemini’s interface and comparing it to ChatGPT, Logan Kilpatrick — product manager of Google AI Studio and Gemini API — confirmed that the company is now making «a huge investment» in developing Gemini App UX 2.0.

The current version of the app really doesn’t unlock the full potential of the available features. An updated interface could better emphasize Gemini’s capabilities and make it easier to access the tools for everyday use.

Kilpatrick also said that Google is working on a native Gemini app for macOS.

ChatGPT already offers full native apps for Windows and Mac, making it easier to use and opening up advanced features — such as integration with Notion, Terminal and Apple Notes. In the case of Gemini on PC, the only way to work — is through the web version, which, while functional, looks less user-friendly and polished compared to the native ChatGPT client.

On a Mac or Windows, for example, uploading multiple files to ChatGPT through the app is much easier. In Gemini, the same process requires the use of a browser, which slows things down considerably.

In addition, as AI models gain agent-based capabilities, a native app will allow for more efficient handling of local files and integration with other programs on the computer.
