Although the age limit for ChatGPT is 13+, parents previously had no way to control how their children used the platform. The new features allow you to link parent and teen accounts for better protection, customize settings, and limit usage time.

In a post on X.com, OpenAI details the new features. Specifically, parents will be able to reduce viewing of sensitive content, which includes automatic customization when a teen’s account is connected. Parents will also be able to manage ChatGPT’s memory, deciding whether to save past chats for personalization, and set “quiet hours” when use of the platform is limited.

Additionally, voice and imaging can be disabled, and ChatGPT use can be restricted for training and security purposes. The important point is that restrictions can only be imposed in consultation with your teen. Mutual invitation and confirmation is required to link accounts. Parents do not have access to their children’s private chats unless a serious threat is detected.

OpenAI notes that the new measures do not yet fully address all security issues, and plans to improve them in collaboration with experts and child advocacy organizations.

How to Enable Parental Controls

After upgrading, you’ll have a Parental Controls section in your account settings. There, sliders are available to customize security settings, content restrictions, and time limits.

These features are available today for all ChatGPT users and will be available on mobile devices soon.
