Huawei and Ericsson sign cross-license agreement on 5G patents

Huawei has announced a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement with Sweden’s Ericsson. The partnership covers standards such as 3GPP, ITU, IEEE and IETF for 3G, 4G and 5G cellular technologies.
The agreement covers sales of both network infrastructure and consumer devices, and the companies will be able to use each other’s patented standardized technologies.

Alan Fan, head of intellectual property at Huawei, said the two companies highly value each other’s IP, and this agreement creates a «stronger patent environment». The partnership is also a testament that intellectual property should be respected and protected, he added.
Christina Petersson, Ericsson’s CIPO, said this «balanced approach» is in the interest of both parties and serves the interests of consumers and businesses. The Swedish company expects revenue from licensing deals to reach SEK11 billion (nearly $1 billion) in 2023. The company’s press release notes that Ericsson holds more than 60,000 patents and has a leading position as a 5G technology provider.
