The iPhone 16 has become the world’s best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2025

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s iPhone 16 is the world’s best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2025. It is followed by the iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 15. Samsung’s Galaxy A16 5G came in fifth.
iPhone 16 beats Apple’s Pro lineup
The previous year, Apple’s flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max was the sales leader. Now the standard iPhone 16 model has overtaken even the more expensive devices from the Pro lineup. Experts explain this by the fact that Apple has narrowed the gap between its basic and professional models in terms of functionality and performance. For example, the iPhone 16 is equipped with an A18 processor, which is almost as fast as the A18 Pro installed in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Both devices get an Action button and a camera control button.
At the end of the first quarter of 2025, Apple holds five positions in the top 10 best-selling smartphones at once: the top four spots and the tenth spot, where the iPhone 16 Plus sits. Among Samsung’s competitors, only the Galaxy S25 Ultra ranked seventh, with the rest of the ranks going to more affordable models.

Demand for the iPhone 16e is growing
The iPhone 16e model, priced starting at $600, doesn’t go on sale until March 2025, but it’s already ranked sixth in Counterpoint’s top 10 smartphones for March. The iPhone 16e is expected to outsell the iPhone SE in its first year of sales due to its higher level of features.
Markets where Apple leads
The Counterpoint Research report notes that the iPhone 16 is selling particularly well in Japan and the Middle East and Africa (MEA). However, in China, sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have come under pressure due to government subsidies for more affordable models and competition from local manufacturers including Huawei.
