Older Macs won’t be able to upgrade to macOS 26

Apple is preparing to release macOS 26, but owners of a number of older Mac models may be left without the update. According to AppleInsider, the new operating system will be unveiled at the WWDC 2025 conference, which begins June 9, but not all devices will be able to install macOS 26.

MacOS 26 support will be limited to more modern models

The following models will receive the update, as revealed in the macOS 26 preview builds:

  • MacBook Pro 2019 and newer
  • MacBook Air based on M1 and newer
  • iMac 2020 and newer
  • Mac Pro 2019 and newer
  • Mac mini based on M1 and newer
  • All Mac Studio models

This list does not include the 2018 MacBook Pro, 2017 iMac Pro, or the 2018 Mac mini and 2020 Intel-powered MacBook Air. These devices, as the oldest devices supporting macOS Sequoia, are very likely to lose support in the new system.

macOS 26 will get an updated interface and Apple Intelligence features

MacOS 26, like iOS 26 (formerly iOS 19), is expected to get a revamped interface with elements reminiscent of visionOS. There will also be Apple Intelligence features, which will likely only be available on newer Mac models.

Sources say developers will be able to download the first beta version of macOS 26 at around 17GB – that’s 2GB more than macOS Sequoia. The official name of macOS 26 has not yet been revealed, but the company has traditionally named versions after California locations — Sequoia, Redwood, Skyline, or Diablo, for example.
