“Kino” became listened to one and a half times more often: Yandex Music studied the popularity of the cult band

On the occasion of Viktor Tsoi’s memorial day, Yandex Music analyzed users’ interest in the legendary band Kino. On Yandex Music, the band has almost 6 million likes and more than 3 million monthly listeners. Interest in Kino’s work is only growing: in the first half of 2023, the number of listens on the service increased by 61% compared to the same period in 2022. The band is particularly popular with young people, with more than half of its listeners being under 35.

This growth was also due to Yandex Music’s personal recommendation system – 47% of listens were to My Wave. My Wave noticed a positive response to tracks from listeners and started recommending them to new audiences more often. For example, over the past year, users have given the band Kino around 4 million likes on My Wave.

The band’s most listened-to song in the first half of 2023 on Yandex Music was “Blood Group.” Also particularly popular with users are “A Star Called Sun”, “Change”, “Summer Will End”, “Pack of Cigarettes” and “Quiet Night” – it is re-listened to most often.The cult Soviet rock band led by frontman Viktor Tsoi after nine years of existence left behind a legacy of 8 studio albums, which contain a total of about a hundred songs. The Leningrad band’s popularity peaked in the mid-80s, but even now, more than 40 years later, Kino’s songs are beloved by listeners of different generations.
