Sandisk announces Stargate controller for SSDs up to 512TB

Sandisk has announced a promising SSD controller architecture called Stargate, which, combined with the latest BiCS8 QLC memory, promises to take SSD capacity to the next level. The company plans to release 128TB models as early as this year and 512TB drives by 2027.
CEO David Geckeler called the project “explosive” and emphasized that Stargate is a “clean slate” in ASIC design, not another reworking of old solutions. The controller is being built from the ground up specifically for today’s enterprise and data center storage requirements.
A new level of scalability
The first drives with the Stargate controller are expected to arrive as early as the third quarter of 2025 under the name DC SN670. They will use BiCS8 QLC NAND chips with a capacity of 2 Tbit (256 GB) each. A single controller is expected to be able to handle 64 crystals per channel – so a 512TB SSD could require 32 channels. By comparison, typical consumer SSDs today rarely go beyond 8 channels.

P PCIe 6.0 and the potential for growth
The new Stargate architecture could upgrade the DC SN670 series of drives to PCIe 6.0 support, although they were previously announced as PCIe 5.0-compliant. This move will increase bandwidth and better unlock the potential of massive flash memory.
It’s interesting that despite the focus on the enterprise market, the advent of the Stargate controller and higher capacity QLC NAND may subsequently impact consumer SSDs as well. In the next few years, we may see affordable models with capacities that would have seemed like science fiction just a short time ago.
It’s interesting to note that while the Stargate controller and higher capacity QLC NAND may have a subsequent impact on consumer SSDs.

When to expect more details?
The Computex 2025 trade show starts very soon, and that’s where Sandisk may reveal more technical details about the Stargate controller and future SSDs. Given the growing interest in high-capacity and reliable drives in both the server and consumer segments, these solutions seem like a timely move.
Sandisk’s new Stargate controller and future SSDs will be available at Computex 2025.
