WhatsApp Web will soon have voice and video calling support

WhatsApp plans to add the ability to make voice and video calls directly through the web version of the service. The feature has already been available in the desktop apps for Windows and macOS since 2021, and now, four years later, it may finally make its way to the browser client.
What’s known about WhatsApp Web’s new features
WABetaInfo reports that the latest beta version of WhatsApp Web shows signs of preparing a calling feature. While the new feature is not yet available in the stable version of the web client, it appears that calls will work similarly to PC apps: you can call individual contacts as well as groups.
To start a call, users will need to grant access to the microphone and webcam. These permissions will remain in place until cookies or site data is deleted from the browser. Permission can be granted on a per-session basis if desired.

Why it matters
The addition of calls to the browser version will greatly simplify the communication process. Users will no longer have to install a separate app to make calls from a new device.
Meta* had previously provided similar support for the web version of Messenger, so it was only a matter of time before WhatsApp Web expanded its functionality.
With the addition of WhatsApp Web, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll be able to offer the same support.
When to expect the update
There’s no exact timeline for the launch of WhatsApp Web calling yet. However, the discovery of the feature in the beta version of the client indicates that an official release could be imminent.
In addition, WhatsApp recently began rolling out a new Advanced Chat Privacy feature that prevents other users from exporting your chats, indicating that it continues to actively work on the service’s security and functionality.
