Apple re-releases firmware for AirPods Max with Lossless-audio support

Apple has re-released a firmware update for the USB-C version of the AirPods Max – now with full lossless-audio support. The update was originally published alongside iOS 18.4, but a bug in the system prevented users from installing it. The problem has now been fixed and the new firmware version is available for download.

Lossless support and ultra-low latency – only for AirPods Max with USB-C

A firmware build numbered 7E101 for AirPods Max with USB-C connector has appeared on Apple’s official support page. The previous version, released at the same time as iOS 18.4, was numbered 7E99, but a bug prevented the devices from downloading the update.

The new firmware includes long-awaited support for lossless-audio over USB-C, as well as ultra-low latency when playing through a cable. It’s also the first time full wired listening with Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.

Important: these features are available exclusively on the USB-C model introduced in 2023. The version with a Lightning connector will not get lossless-audio support.

How to check and install new firmware

To find out what firmware version is installed on your headphones, you need to connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad and open the AirPods menu at the top of «Settings».

Firmware installation is automatic, but Apple recommends following these steps to speed up the process:

  1. Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to iOS 18.4 or macOS 15.4 – lossless support only works on these versions.
  2. Pair AirPods Max to your device via Bluetooth.
  3. Make sure the device is connected to Wi-Fi.
  4. Put your AirPods on charge.
  5. Keep the headphones in the case next to the device for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Wear the AirPods and check the firmware version again.

Apple doesn’t provide a way to manually install firmware for AirPods, so the process may take some time. Still, the update is worth the wait: lossless-audio and minimal latency on a wired connection are important steps toward professional sound quality on Apple’s earbuds.
