VK Tech launches Russia’s first cloud Data Lakehouse

VK Tech has become the first Russian company to launch an enterprise Data Lakehouse in the cloud. The new Cloud Trino service integrated into VK Cloud allows businesses to work efficiently with big data by combining the advantages of Data Lake and Data Warehouse.

VK Tech has become the first Russian company to launch an enterprise Data Lakehouse in the cloud.

How Data Lakehouse works in VK Cloud

VK Tech’s cloud-based Data Lakehouse offers a new approach to data management that combines the flexibility of Data Lakes with the structure of traditional Data Warehouses. This approach enables:

  • Reduce the load on storage and processing systems.
  • Optimize the cost of storing unstructured data.
  • Efficiently analyze data by separating compute and storage.

The Data Lakehouse is based on S3-compatible object storage in-house developed, and the powerful Cloud Trino SQL engine powered by Kubernetes. The use of modified open-source components makes the solution affordable and scalable – companies pay only for the resources actually consumed, without having to purchase expensive licenses.

Cloud Trino: accelerated analytics and cost savings

The Cloud Trino service as part of VK Cloud opens up new opportunities for data processing:

  • Multi-source connectivity – accelerates ETL processes and analyzes large data sets.
  • Cloud Storage (S3) – reduces the cost of storing 1 GB to 3 rubles, which is 10 times cheaper than traditional Data Warehouse (35 rubles per 1 GB).
  • Flexible scalability – Kubernetes at the heart of Cloud Trino allows you to quickly increase computing power without the need to set aside resources for peak loads.

VK Tech makes working with data more accessible

The amount of data being created globally is growing rapidly. In 2024, about 402.89 million terabytes were generated daily, and this is expected to increase to 181 zettabytes per year by 2025.

And it’s expected to increase to 181 zettabytes per year.

VK Cloud product director Dmitry Lazarenko emphasized the importance of efficient solutions for businesses:

“Data is growing exponentially, and speed of data is becoming a key competitive advantage. We’re building tools that enable companies to analyze data faster and cheaper. The new Cloud Trino service complements our technology stack by enabling us to build the Data Lakehouse on an as a service model. Our goal is to make it as fast and affordable as possible.”

Where to deploy Data Lakehouse VK Tech

VK Tech offers Data Lakehouse deployment both in the VK Cloud and on private infrastructure (Private Cloud and VK Data Platform). And the VK Cloud platform is 152-FZ (UZ-1) certified, making it suitable for sensitive data.
