CES 2025: Mecha Systems announces Comet, a modular handheld computer for both engineers and roboticists

Comet, developed by Mecha Systems, is a modular handheld computer designed for hobby, engineering, learning, creativity and robotics. This device is not a phone, but rather an open space for creativity and experimentation. The Comet runs on Linux and offers flexibility in customization, making it an ideal choice for those who want to customize the device to suit their needs.

The Comet is a modular handheld computer that is designed to be used in a variety of ways.

Main features of Comet:

  • Processor: 1.8 GHz ARM64 Quad-core, which gives good performance for many tasks.
  • Operative Memory: 4 GB.
  • Data storage: 32 GB internal memory, expandable.
  • Display: 3.4-inch IPS LED screen with capacitive sensor.
  • Camera: 5 MP with autofocus.
  • Sound: built-in microphone and speaker.
  • Ports: two USB-A, Ethernet port, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi support (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 802.11ac).
  • OS: runs on Mechanix OS, a proprietary Linux distribution from Mecha Systems.

Modular Extension System

One of the most interesting features of Comet is the modular design. Using magnetic connections, users can attach various extensions to the device, turning it into any gadget they need. There are currently three standard extensions available:

  • Gamepad: with soft D-pad buttons and four control buttons.
  • GPIO panel: with access to 40 pins.
  • Keyboard: with ABS keys.

These extensions allow you to transform the Comet into a gaming console, an electronics development tool, a mini computer for work, or any other device you can imagine.

Flexibility and accessibility for experimentation

Comet is designed for technology lovers and enthusiasts willing to explore and modify every element of the device. The front and back case of the device can be easily removed to access the internal components, and even the screen can be removed by removing a few screws. All parts of the case and extensions are available as 3D printable files, making the Comet extremely customizable.

Features and Uses of Comet

Comet is ideal for experimenting and creating new devices. It can work with any Raspberry Pi HAT and mikroBUS Click boards. At CES 2025, Mecha Systems demonstrated several applications including a Chrome browser, notes page and camera. It also showed a video of Comet controlling a small robotic wheel. Possibilities for the device include use as a remote control for drones, a communicator for cars, or even as the basis for developing nanosatellites, AI assistants, and long-range radio transmitters.
