WhatsApp is testing a reminder feature for unread messages

WhatsApp, actively used by billions of users around the world, is working on a new feature that will help users deal with the high volume of unread messages.

New Reminders feature

In the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.24.25.29), a reminder option has been spotted extending from missed statuses to unread private messages.

How it works:

  • Intelligent message selection: reminders are not sent for all unread messages, but are selected based on device metrics such as user activity and the importance of the correspondence.
  • Data calibration: when restoring a backup to a new device, the feature automatically adapts because reminder data is not saved in backups.

.

Settings and management

The feature is enabled by default, but it can be easily disabled in WhatsApp’s notification settings. Users who will be annoyed by repetitive reminders can deactivate the Reminders switch.

Availability

While Meta* is testing the feature in beta, it may never appear in a stable build. WhatsApp hasn’t made any official announcements about its release, which leaves the fate of reminders uncertain.

Meta* Owned by Meta, it is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and its activities are banned.
