Google says it will eliminate the Album Archive next month

Services like Google Hangouts, while hugely popular a few years ago, have been shut down in favor of Google Chat. Some of the images you shared on that platform and other dysfunctional services still remain in Album Archive, allowing you to view them in one convenient place, no matter what device you sent them from. The company is currently emailing users about the upcoming closure of Album Archive and encouraging them to back up their content with Google Takeout.

Many users, including several members of the ITZine.ru team, have already received this email. But even if you haven’t received an email about this change, when you visit the Album Archive page from your Google Account, you will see a banner at the top that informs you that your content will be deleted after July 19, 2023.

In an email, Google clarifies that «content available only in the Album Archive» will be removed starting July 19. The company specifies that this could be both Google Hangouts data stored in the Album Archive and background images uploaded using Gmail’s theme selector before 2018. Small thumbnails of photos, album comments or «likes» that may be stored in the Album Archive will also be removed, the letter says.

The company said.

On the «Album Archive» page, you can view a gallery of images or videos you sent to old Google services over the years, in my case it was Hangouts. If there’s something worth saving, Takeout allows you to get a link to download it via email or move it to cloud services like Google Drive, Box, OneDrive or Dropbox.

It’s worth noting that Google Takeout download links received via email are only valid for seven days. What’s more, Google notes that Workspace users will need administrator permission to download images/videos from Takeout.

The support page detailing the discontinuation of Album Archive says users will be able to «view and manage» content from services such as Blogger, Hangouts (Chat), Google Photos and the standard Google account that contains profile photos after July 19.

The Album Archive page — is a good way to distract yourself and review old stuff you shared on Google (and may have forgotten about). But the email message has certainly confused some people, especially since images and videos will still be available on other Google services after July 19, 2023.
