The web version of Google Calendar finally has a dark theme and Material design 3
Now you’ll no longer be blinded by a bright screen when you open Google Calendar on your computer or Chromebook late at night. The long-awaited update that will save your eyes is finally available – dark theme for Google Calendar in the web version. Google announced the update on its Google Workspace Updates blog.

The new features include the ability to switch between a light and dark theme, as well as setting the mode to match your device’s theme. In addition, icons have been updated and more modern and user-friendly buttons have been added to meet Google’s Material Design 3 standards.

This update is part of a major redesign of all Google apps to meet modern standards. Material Design 3 focuses on improving accessibility, usability, and a modern look.
New controls have been added to the web version of Google Calendar. When you click on the settings icon in the top right corner, a minimalistic drop-down menu appears where you can find settings, cart, density and color options, and access additional features. The print menu is now more accessible as well.

How to enable a dark theme in Google Calendar
To use the dark theme, you need to activate it manually. Here’s how to do it:
- Click the settings icon in the top right corner of Google Calendar.
- Select Appearance.
- Set the mode to Light, Dark, or Default for the device.
This setting will also affect the Google Tasks interface, which is now fully integrated with the web version of Google Calendar. Users who open tasks through tasks.google.com will see the updated interface.

Impact on Chrome Extensions
It’s worth noting that this update may affect some installed extensions for the Chrome browser when using Google Calendar. Google recommends checking extensions if the new update is causing problems.
The launch of the update began today for quick-release domains, and users of scheduled-release domains will begin receiving it on December 2, 2024. All Google Workspace users will be able to take advantage of the new features today.
