Audi will integrate ChatGPT into about two million vehicles, starting with 2021 model years.

ChatGPT will be added to models with the MIB 3 infotainment system starting in July, according to an Audi press release Thursday. The popular AI chatbot will also be included in the automaker’s E3 1.2 e-architecture, debuting on the 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron electric SUV. In models equipped with the MIB 3 system, ChatGPT will be able to answer general questions, complementing the existing voice recognition system for in-car functions such as infotainment, navigation and climate control.

In the Q6 E-Tron and other upcoming models, ChatGPT will act as an extension of the Audi-developed voice assistant, activated by the «Hey Audi» command or push-to-talk button. This voice assistant can already control vehicle functions and provide information such as weather forecasts. The system will ask ChatGPT general questions that it cannot answer on its own. Audi sees other future possibilities, such as allowing ChatGPT to answer questions about the car itself, such as tire pressure settings. Outside of the car, Audi also plans to use the AI software for quality control, including checking spot welds and looking for cracks in materials during vehicle assembly.

The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI, from parent brand Audi, is also adding ChatGPT as part of an updated infotainment system. As with Audi, VW’s ChatGPT integration primarily functions as an enhancement to its voice recognition system. Mercedes-Benz announced a beta testing program for ChatGPT in 2023, making the chatbot available in more than 900,000 vehicles equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system.
