If you want to win sea battles, escape robbers, collect treasure, and generally be the best pirate in Sea of Thieves, you’re going to have to learn a lot. Luckily, these tips will help you become an efficient sailor, an agile brawler, and a smart privateer when you join the crew.

Start Sea of Thieves with a training mission
Sea of Thieves took the time to add a tutorial mission for aspiring pirates called Maiden Voyage. It’s hard to overstate how useful this tutorial is: It’s a safe place without marauding PvP players, where you’ll be taught how to pilot a ship and help new players get a better understanding of the world as it works. There’s also a chance to get exclusive loot! As Sea of Thieves can be a bit intimidating, so you need to figure out and master all the controls for the different actions. We highly recommend not skipping this mission

Sail the safe seas
Rare took several years of updates to add this option, but Safer Seas — is a private server that will allow you to master the seas without the threat of other, more experienced, players ruining your fun. Progression in this mode will be limited, but it’s the perfect place to practice all the available mechanics before venturing into more dangerous waters.
Please note that you’ll be able to get a head start on the game.
Follow the Compass
A huge emphasis in Sea of Thieves is on solving riddles and puzzles. In true pirate fashion, many of them ask you to take “X number of steps” in one direction or another. Counting steps in the game isn’t easy, but if you hold a compass while walking, you’ll get a much clearer picture.
Pick up the right flag
As mentioned many times, teamwork is what makes Sea of Thieves special, so find some fellow pirates. By raising a certain flag on your ship, you’re signaling to other players that you’re willing to cooperate. If one ship raises the “Propose Alliance” flag, any other ship nearby can ally with it to complete missions and adventures together. This also allows you to tag your comrades on the map, sail together, and revive each other. However, some people will use this as an opportunity to trap you.

Participate in the seasons
Sea of Thieves — a live-service game, and it has long had a seasonal model. Each season has its own progression system, where you can complete 100 Renown levels, earning rewards along the way. During the season, you earn Renown by completing just about any task, but the biggest plushies usually come from trials, events, and adventures. Trials come in three types: green, blue, and purple, and each gives you a larger Renown boost. Seasons vary in length, but usually last at least three months.
Events should be high on your to-do list whenever they come up. Not only do they speed up progression through the season, but they also reward unique cosmetics, titles, and currency. Events can last either one day or several weeks, so don’t miss them!”
They’re a great way to make sure you don’t miss out!
Beware of random events
Sailing the sea is already dangerous because of other players, but the game itself can also turn on you at a moment’s notice. Sure, there are storms to be wary of, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg, ready to ruin your plans. In the course of world events, you can stumble upon skeleton forts and lucky forts, where challenging enemies and bosses await you, as well as fleets of skeletons and ghosts that will engage in naval battles. There are rewards for completing all of these quests, but they are quite risky. You never know when they might show up, and encountering one while you’re out of supplies and desperately trying to get back to shore can be cause for alarm.

choose your weapons carefully
When you start going through Sea of Thieves, you take a cleaver and a flintlock pistol with you, but there are several other weapon options waiting for you in the ship’s hold. On the galleon, you’ll find a gun locker on the middle deck at the front of the ship where you can replenish your ammo and change weapons.
There are three weapon options that you can bring with you into battle: the pistol — a fairly powerful and accurate medium-range weapon; the blunderbuss — a devastating close-range shotgun; and the eye-of-reach sniper rifle, which obviously has a longer range. A pistol will get you through most situations, but don’t be afraid to switch things up, carry two weapons, or diversify what your whole team carries.
Another gun will help you in most situations.
For example, blunderbusses are great for stopping boarding parties with a single point-blank shot, and a long-range can help you kill the gunners on a neighboring ship. A pistol can take out skeletons with a single shot, keeping them out of your surroundings. Experiment with all weapons to see what suits you best and what the situation calls for. The right tool can save the life of you and your ship.
Manage your inventory

Before you embark on a voyage or challenge, make sure your ship is sufficiently equipped for the adventure ahead. At a minimum, you’ll need to stock up on food, wood for repairs, and cannonballs. Even the simplest adventure can go wrong, and a lack of supplies — a guarantee of failure. While you’re out exploring, additional supplies can be found on various islands to replenish your supplies for the return trip. In addition to treasure, keep an eye out for potentially life-saving materials.
Here’s what to look out for.
