Elden Ring is getting a movie adaptation from A24 Studios

One of the most mysterious and atmospheric games of the last decade, Elden Ring, is about to get a second life – on the big screens. Bandai Namco has officially confirmed that a full-length feature film is being made based on the FromSoftware hit.

A director with experience in dystopian fiction

The project will be the result of Bandai Namco’s collaboration with American studio A24, known for its unconventional approach to genre and visual style. It will be directed by Alex Garland, who has written such films as Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and War. Garland has also written the screenplays for 28 Days Later, Dredd and the upcoming 28 Years Later.

The film will be produced by Peter Rice, with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich (DNA Films) producing, in tandem with George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis. As a reminder, it was Martin who helped create the mythology and world of the Elden Ring.

From video game to mass audience

FromSoftware’s original Elden Ring game was renowned for its complexity and depth of world-building. For many players, it proved too hardcore – and the movie could be a great way to get to know its story without too much stress. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who helmed the development of Elden Ring, is also known for Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro.

What’s known now

Plot details and cast are being kept secret for now. There’s also no exact release date, and it’s an open question as to which narrative angle the team will choose – whether they’ll tell the events of the game itself, or present an original story in its universe.

A supplement for gamers is coming soon

While fans wait for news on the movie, they’ll have something to do: the co-op spin-off Elden Ring: Nightreign is coming out on May 30. It will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, expanding the universe with new mechanics and story branches.
