Xiaomi regained the top spot in China’s smartphone market for the first time in a decade

According to Canalys’ Q1 2025 report, Xiaomi came out on top in terms of smartphone shipments in China. The manufacturer shipped 13.3 million devices, capturing 19% of the market.
Ecosystem synergy and smart pricing strategy
Analysts attribute Xiaomi’s success to the synergy effect between its smartphone business and the broader ecosystem, from wearable devices to PCs to electric cars. Unified pricing policies online and offline have allowed the company to leverage government subsidies, incentivize bundle purchases and lower consumer decision-making barriers.

Huawei breathes down its back
Huawei came in second place with 13 million devices shipped and 18% market share. The company continues its strong growth thanks to investments in foldable smartphones such as the Mate XT and Pura X, as well as the advancement of HarmonyOS Next. Canalys predicts that this operating system will be on 3% of smartphones in China by the end of 2025.

Oppo and Vivo remained in third and fourth place
Oppo and Vivo shipped 10.6 million and 10.4 million devices respectively, taking 15% share each. However, only Vivo managed to slightly increase sales year-on-year, while Oppo recorded a 3% decline.
Apple fell out of the top 4
Apple’s drop to fifth place was most unexpected. The company shipped 9.2 million iPhones, down 8% from a year earlier. The decline is attributed to the seasonal peak at the end of 2024 and continued challenges with the growing popularity of local brands and the price sensitivity of the Chinese market.

Total Market Growth
As a whole, China’s smartphone market has shown a modest recovery. In the first quarter, 70.9 million devices were shipped, up 5% from a year ago. Canalys attributes the growth to national subsidy programs and improved consumer sentiment, but notes that much of the demand was «dragged» forward rather than formed organically.
