X loses users in Europe: minus 11 million in six months

Platform X (formerly Twitter), owned by Ilon Musk, continues to rapidly lose users in the European Union. According to a new report released by the company itself, some 11 million people have left X in the past five months – that’s more than 10% of the service’s total European audience.

The biggest losses are in France and Germany

According to an April transparency report on the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), X has 94.8 million active users in the EU as of March 2025. By comparison, that figure was over 100 million before Ilon Musk bought the company in 2022.

The biggest decline was recorded in France, where the audience dropped from 20.1 million to 17.4 million users. In Poland, almost 2 million people left, in Germany about 1.5 million, and in Spain more than a million. Even in smaller countries, such as Luxembourg and Lithuania, the churn amounted to about 25% of the previous number of users.

Why is X publishing this data?”

After the DSA went into effect, major digital platforms are required to regularly publish reports on content moderation and user activity. This forces X to disclose statistics that the company might otherwise keep secret.

The current report covers the period from October 2024 to March 2025 and shows that the platform continues to lose popularity in the EU – despite Musk’s claims of “regaining interest” and growing engagement.

User loss is part of a global trend

The decline in activity isn’t just affecting Europe. According Financial Times, X has lost up to a third of its daily audience in the UK and nearly a fifth in the US since the end of 2022. That said, Musk continues to assure that the social network is “on the upswing,” citing a brief uptick in traffic after the November 2024 US election, which Donald Trump won again.

But that surge quickly waned, and user confidence in the platform continues to decline. The global protests against Tesla and the carmaker’s 71% drop in profits have added to the backdrop of distrust, reinforcing Musk’s negative image in the public eye.

What’s next?

Although X is under no obligation to disclose data outside the EU, analysts are predicting further decline worldwide. Audience churn, falling revenues and worsening reputational problems suggest the platform is far from at its best – despite optimistic claims from its owner.
