TikTok launches “Feed Nearby” feature
TikTok has announced the launch of its new “Nearby Ribbon” feature, which allows users to view content related to their immediate surroundings. The innovation is already available in the UK, France, Italy and Germany and is designed to help users find restaurants, events and places of interest nearby.
The feature, called Nearby Feed, was originally tested in 2022 and is available to a limited number of users in Southeast Asia. Now, the company says Nearby Feed will become part of the global platform.
TikTok explained that content in this feed is shown based on location, the topic of the post and when it was created. Users will be able to see the latest local news, events, restaurants, attractions and cultural activities, which will help to get more involved in their city or region. It also means increased reach in the local community for the authors of the publications.
It’s important to note that using location data is optional. It requires enabling the appropriate settings, which are only available to users over the age of 18. TikTok uses the device’s GPS data for more accurate recommendations, and iOS users will see a corresponding indicator when accessing their geo-data.
The Nearby Ribbon feature helps support the local economy – according to the company, 46% of TikTok users in the UK have traveled to or visited local stores, restaurants or attractions seen on the app.
To go to “Feed Nearby,” you need to open the TikTok homepage and select the appropriate tab, the name of which will reflect your current location. It’s not yet known if and when TikTok plans to expand the feature’s launch to other regions.
