MediaTek unveiled the Helio G200 processor

MediaTek continues to employ a familiar strategy for budget and mid-budget chips: releasing updated versions of previous processors under new names. The new Helio G200 is yet another example of this approach, effectively representing a slightly improved Helio G100.
Minimal differences from its predecessor
Like the G100, the new Helio G200 is built on an eight-core architecture: two Cortex-A76 cores clocked up to 2.2GHz and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. The GPU remains in the same Mali-G57 class, but with a slightly increased frequency, up to 1.1GHz.
Memory and storage support is also unchanged, with LPDDR4X (up to 4266 Mbps) and UFS 2.2. In essence, the changes come down to minor frequency increases and minor power efficiency optimizations.
So far, the changes have been limited to minor frequency increases and minor power efficiency optimizations.

Declared improvements and marketing emphasis
MediaTek avoids directly comparing the G200 to the G100, preferring to compare the new product to “competitors”. According to the company’s internal data, the Helio G200 shows:
- +35% performance in AnTuTu,
- +40% in single-core and +20% in multi-core Geekbench,
- +75% increase in graphics,
- up to +30% energy efficiency in games.
Camera, display and connectivity – no change
Camera support remains the same, with up to 200 MP, multi-frame noise reduction and 12-bit DCG technology for HDR video. The display unit supports Full HD+ at 120Hz and Intelligent Display Sync technology for dynamic refresh rate control.
Networking capabilities include an integrated Cat-13 LTE modem with support for 4G VoLTE, 4×4 MIMO, 256QAM and global bands. It also adds an updated 4G DC SAR module, which should improve performance in messenger and social networking in weak signal conditions.
Totals
MediaTek Helio G200 is more of a marketing update of the G100 with minimal changes to the architecture. The chip is aimed at low-cost smartphones with a focus on balancing performance and cost, but technically it’s still the same tried-and-true G100 with some light cosmetic tweaks.
