Macs will no longer require updates when unpacking

Future Macs may ship with a fully up-to-date version of macOS, eliminating the need for users to install updates immediately after purchase. This is indicated by findings in the macOS 26 Tahoe beta.

According to 9to5Mac, the third beta of the system reveals first mentions and code of Presto technology, which is already in use for the iPhone. Its essence is that retailers can update devices right in the sealed box – without opening the packaging.

How does Presto work?

  • Special racks with six compartments accept smartphones.
  • Devices turn on wirelessly (MagSafe and NFC).
  • The update is downloaded through Wi-Fi, after which the iPhone turns off again.

This saves customers from having to spend time downloading and installing the software immediately after unboxing.

Mac Difficulties

The big question is how to adapt Presto for computers? Unlike the iPhone, Macs don’t have NFC, and their size and design make wireless control difficult. Possible options:

  • Returning NFC to the Mac (the chip was previously already used in laptops).
  • Alternative wireless activation technologies.

Apple isn’t revealing details yet, but the mere fact that the code is present in macOS Tahoe suggests that the company is actively working on the feature.

Will it be implemented?

Discovery of a feature in beta doesn’t guarantee its appearance in the final version. However, Apple is clearly considering such a scenario – perhaps the first Macs with Presto will be available in the next generation.

If the technology gets deployed, it would be another step toward the ideal user experience: no waiting, just ready-to-use devices right out of the box.
