Ilon Musk accused Apple of antitrust violations over ChatGPT

Ilon Musk said his company xAI will “immediately take legal action” against Apple, accusing it of bias in favor of OpenAI and ChatGPT. He said the App Store never promotes Grok or Social Network X, while ChatGPT is integrated into iOS and receives widespread attention from Apple.

Mask’s claims and Apple’s stance

X ranks first among free news apps in the App Store and 38th overall. Grok is in sixth position on the list of free apps. But that’s not enough for Musk: He claims Apple is deliberately preventing his services from reaching the top spot by ignoring them in the “Must Have” section.

The billionaire also said that users should be able to choose which AI app to use – Grok or ChatGPT. It’s unclear whether Grok’s absence from the integrations is due to Apple not contacting xAI, or whether xAI disagrees with Apple’s strict privacy requirements.

The success of X and Grok doesn’t guarantee promotion

Despite criticism, both of Musk’s services have high rankings. X, formerly known as Twitter, retains a loyal audience, including celebrities and athletes. However, the choice of the news category is questionable: the social network is often inferior in terms of news content to mainstream media and, according to research, lost a significant portion of its active users after Musk’s purchase.

Grok remains a popular AI service, ranking sixth in the App Store’s overall rankings and second in the “Productivity” category behind ChatGPT, despite the scandals surrounding the content.

How App Store promotion works

App Store app rankings are generated automatically and are independent of Apple’s editors. However, the company manually compiles “Must-Have Apps” and “Essential Social Apps,” where X and Grok are not included. It includes TikTok, Tinder, Duolingo, YouTube, Mastodon, Bluesky, Signal, Pinterest, and Snapchat, as well as the ChatGPT widget on the homepage.

Mask and Apple’s longtime rivalry

This isn’t Musk’s first conflict with Apple. He has previously criticized the company for its partnership with OpenAI, its refusal to use the Starlink satellite service, its temporary suspension of advertising on X, and its 30% commission on the App Store.

Apple, for its part, is under no obligation to promote specific apps. Experts say the reputational risks associated with X and Grok may be the reason they’re not in App Store storefronts.
