Finnish HMD, known for Nokia smartphones and its own devices, is preparing to enter a new segment: the company is developing its first laptop, the Chromebook-transformer HMD Book CS-1 Flip.

According to a leak by user X @smashx_60, the model will be called the HMD (Chrome)Book CS-1 Flip or HMD Book CS-1 Flip. The Flip designation indicates a 360-degree swivel hinge and touchscreen, a format familiar from ASUS’ Chromebook Flip lineup and other convertible devices.

HMD enters the notebook market for the first time

In recent years, HMD has expanded its range from button phones to Android tablets and accessories. But laptops are a new direction. Previously, Nokia had PureBook models under the Nokia brand, but they were produced by a third-party licensee that has since ceased operations. Now we’re talking about a laptop made by HMD itself.

The specs have hardly been revealed so far. The leak only reports the presence of an Intel processor – a notable choice since many low-cost Chromebooks use ARM chips, such as the MediaTek Kompanio.

The screen diagonal, exact processor model, RAM and memory capacity, price, and target audience for the device remain unknown. If the CS-1 Flip hits the market, it will be in a highly competitive segment dominated by Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Samsung.

What’s next

There’s no official confirmation yet. However, the emergence of a leak with a full product name usually indicates that development has progressed beyond early rumors. If the laptop does indeed exist, it could be HMD’s biggest move since moving away from Nokia’s exclusive branding. New details are likely to emerge shortly.
