Apple has radically updated iPadOS 26: new design, even closer to macOS

At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled iPadOS 26, the biggest system update in iPad history. The new release makes the tablet an even more flexible tool for file, media, and multitasking.

The company says it’s a “revolutionary step in productivity.” iPadOS 26 features a redesigned macOS-style windowed interface: apps can be expanded in windows, resized, moved around, tiled at the edges of the screen, and switched between them via a new Exposé mode. A permanent menu bar is now available at the top of the screen. The mouse pointer is now sharp, like on the Mac, instead of circular.
Updates to Files and Preview
The file system has received a major update. The Files app now has List View support, the ability to place folders in the Dock, select standard apps for specific file types, and use the same folder settings as on the Mac. All changes are synchronized across devices.

The Preview app is also now available on iPad – with the ability to view and edit PDFs, fill out forms, and make notes with Apple Pencil.
Audio and video work, background recording, and AirPods
iPadOS 26 brings advanced tools for working with media content. Users can record high quality audio and video directly from the iPad, including during video calls. The system locally saves the recording at the user’s end, eliminating echo and preserving clear audio. All participants can share their local recordings.

AirPods can be used to start recording – just hold down the earpiece. Choose from a variety of audio inputs across apps and websites, as well as voice isolation and studio-quality recording.
Phone Tasks and Automation
Thanks to the updated Background Tasks API, iPad can run resource-intensive processes in the background. These tasks appear as Live Activities and continue to run without interruption. This paves the way for developers to create more complex workflows.

Apple Intelligence and new design
Like iOS 26, the system gets Apple Intelligence support, a revamped lock screen, and redesigned apps. The new interface and improved multitasking work both on the iPad itself and when external displays are connected.
