Apple challenges court ruling: App Store’s future in doubt

Just days after Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers accused Apple of cheating and violating an earlier injunction, the company has filed an appeal. This could stall the implementation of a new ruling requiring Apple to stop charging a 27% commission on app purchases made outside the App Store’s transaction system. That fee applied to apps downloaded through the App Store that directed users to third-party payment methods.

Apple’s ruling would require Apple to stop charging a 27% fee on purchases made on apps made outside the App Store’s transaction system.

Also discussed was Apple’s intention to offer its own transaction system alongside these third-party options.

“To hide the truth, Vice President of Finance Alex Roman blatantly lied under oath. Internally, Philip Schiller advocated for Apple to comply with the ban, but Tim Cook ignored Schiller and instead allowed CFO Luca Maestri and his finance team to convince him otherwise.”

What’s next

Appeal by Apple, as reported by The Verge, does not provide details on how the company plans to challenge the ruling. However, Apple said it “strongly disagrees” with the court’s ruling and will comply with it by filing an appeal.

The original case was brought in 2020 by Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, which sought to open up iOS to third-party app stores and external transaction systems.

After the latest ruling, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced his intention to bring Fortnite back to the App Store. Other developers have also expressed hope for lower prices thanks to reduced commission fees.
