A rendering of the iPhone 17 Pro Max with an unusual camera has raised doubts: truth or fantasy?

A rendering of the iPhone 17 Pro Max with an unusual camera has raised doubts: truth or fantasy?

New renders of the alleged iPhone 17 Pro Max have surfaced online, featuring a massive “camera panel” that spans the entire back of the device. Such a design would be a radical departure from Apple’s usual approach. However, the source of these images is highly questionable, and the idea itself appears to be controversial.

Some of these renders have been released.

According to rumors, Apple could be facing a lack of space for its camera modules, and adding a wide panel to the back of the smartphone could solve this problem. It’s worth noting that the idea of a “camera bar” isn’t new – a similar solution is used in Google’s Pixel smartphones. However, there’s no solid information at this point that Apple will actually opt for this approach.

At this point, it’s not clear that Apple will actually choose this approach.

Camera panel: concept or provocation?

The render, submitted by blogger John Prosser and artist Asher Dipri, shows a huge camera panel that is just an extended version of the familiar camera protrusion. However, the design looks questionable in terms of practicality.

Additional details suggest that the idea for the render may have come from another insider under the pseudonym Majin Bu, whose reputation is also questionable. Dipri’s original render reportedly came before Prosser’s video, and the design itself has been discussed before.

History of Questionable Predictions

Skepticism about the render’s credibility is growing because of Prosser and Bu’s past. Prosser has previously claimed to have seen iPhone designs with flat iPhone 4-style cameras and a flat-angle Apple Watch, but those predictions were never confirmed. Majin Bu is known for frequently spreading information from Chinese social media that often turns out to be false.

The fact that both insiders showed similar renders, however, raises the assumption that they either got the same information from an unreliable source or made an accidental guess.

Practical part: how realistic is the idea?

The current renders show a raised glass panel with a darkened tint, creating a sort of “shelf” for the cameras. However, this design seems not only impractical but also unaesthetic. The protruding elements make the smartphone more vulnerable to damage, and also increase the problem of the device’s instability on flat surfaces.

If Apple does decide to go for such a design, it will be more due to technical necessity, such as to accommodate additional components. However, given the existing technology tetraprism-lens for the 5x telephoto lens, the likelihood of a switch to a different camera architecture is extremely low.

When to wait for confirmation?

At this point, we have no solid information that Apple is indeed developing an iPhone 17 Pro Max with a camera panel. The actual design of the next-generation iPhone won’t be known until the fall when the company officially unveils the lineup.
