HMD Global, the licensee of the Nokia brand, may introduce a new generation of the rugged Nokia 800 Tough button phone — six years after the original was released.

Minimal changes and KaiOS 3.1

An insider specializing in leaks about HMD and Nokia said the company is working on a second version of the 800 Tough. The first one came out in 2019 and featured an enhanced ruggedness. Judging by the render, the exterior looks almost unchanged, with a single camera with LED flash and a speaker grille on the back.

It looks like the design of the 800 Tough has not changed much, with a single camera with LED flash and a speaker grille on the back.

Main updates — a switch from microUSB to a modern USB-C port and a new KaiOS 3.1 operating system instead of 2.5.2. No other major changes are expected.

Longer reliability and same class of protection

As before, the phone should get IP68 water and dust protection and meet the military ruggedness standard MIL-STD-810G.

The original Nokia 800 Tough had a 2.4-inch TFT display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 chipset, 512MB of RAM, and a 2MP camera. It also had Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, and a 2,100mAh battery.

If the leak is confirmed, the Nokia 800 Tough (2nd Gen) will be a minor «refresh» of the model rather than a full-blown upgrade. Pricing and release dates have not yet been named, but with the 2019 version costing €110, we can expect a similar range.
