The iPhone 18 Pro could get Face ID under the screen thanks to HIAA technology

According to Chinese insider Digital Chat Station, Apple will begin introducing under-screen Face ID in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup next year. This would be a significant step toward completely abandoning the Dynamic Island notch, which will still be retained in the iPhone 17 models.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to feature OLED displays measuring 6.27 and 6.86 inches, respectively. The screens will be made with 1.5K LTPO technology and support HIAA – «Hole-in-Active-Area», in which pixels are removed from the active area of the display to provide an unobstructed view for the front-facing camera.

The use of HIAA is not new: a similar solution is already used in smartphones with an under-screen front camera. However, implementing Face ID under the screen requires much more than that, because the system consists of an infrared mesh projector, an emitter, and an infrared camera. Today’s under-screen cameras are designed for visible light, not IR, which presents some technical challenges.
Apple is already rumored to be testing prototype devices with this technology. Implementing Face ID under the screen has been discussed since the release of the iPhone 15, but now the company is apparently ready to implement it in the iPhone 18 Pro, barring any unforeseen difficulties in the process.
So, 2025 could see the long-awaited transition to a completely frameless design with no visible cutouts on the screen.
