Google patents Gemini’s contactless activation method on smartphones

According to media reports, Google is working on an innovative way to activate the Gemini voice assistant. The patented technology involves the ability to quickly summon the AI assistant without having to touch the screen, press buttons, or speak voice commands.

The basic idea behind the new activation method is to teach the smartphone to recognize the moment it comes close to the user’s face. To do this, the plan is to use a sensitive capacitive display layer consisting of miniaturized electrodes. Normally, this layer is used to detect touch, but in theory it could also detect movement near the surface of the screen.

When the phone is brought close to the face, the sensor is able to pick up specific changes in the electric field. This unique pattern is planned to be used to trigger Gemini. In other words, when activated, the AI assistant will automatically start as soon as the smartphone is close to the user’s face.

The feature is not expected to have a significant impact on smartphone battery life, as it utilizes low-power capacitive sensors already built into touchscreens. There is currently no word on whether this innovation will be implemented in the near future.
