Google Maps navigation has gotten a big 3D update

Beta users can now see 3D buildings while navigating.

There are many different navigation apps out there, but for most, Google Maps has become a staple because of its impressive data set, beautiful maps with breathtaking views, great navigation tools and more. For most users, Google Maps —s ease of use, and for others — the constant evolution of the app that allows it to be so much better than the others.

It’s a great way to use Google Maps.

It looks like Google is once again adding new changes to its Maps app, this time making the world more realistic when navigating to a destination. Users will now have the ability to add 3D buildings to maps when using navigation. While this isn’t a big deal to some, small changes like this can have a huge impact on those who use navigation every day. In addition, the ability to visually see buildings in 3D can help drivers better navigate their surroundings.

Although we’ve heard about these changes in the past, they now seem to be rolling out to some beta users, and were initially spotted by AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter) as well as the Android Police team, with them becoming the default option in Google Maps version 124 (11.124.0102). Of course, if you’re not a member of the beta but still want to give it a try, you can always download the app using APKMirror.

After installation, you’ll be able to see this option in the «Settings» menu, under «Map Display». A few lines down from the top, there should be an option «Show 3D buildings». If it is not enabled, you can click on the toggle switch to activate it and you will see the change happen immediately while navigating. As you can see in our examples above, the 3D buildings are not distracting at all and just add another element to the navigation.

If you don’t want to install the app from APKMirror and want access to the beta version of Google Maps, you can always sign up via a link in the Google Play Store. You will need to confirm that you want to become a tester and once approved, you will get access to the beta version of the app. But keep in mind that the option may not appear right away, so be patient. And if you’ve never used Google Maps before, give it a try.
