Mail.ru unveiled a free neural network to restore old photos

A new neural network technology has appeared on the official page of Mail.ru service, which allows you to restore old black-and-white photos and fill in missing elements in photos. Anyone can try out the technology for free.

To use the service, all you have to do is upload a scan of an old photo and wait about 15 seconds for the photo to be processed. You can then choose from three different versions of the restored photo, which you can download, share on social media or save to a cloud archive.
Dmitri Merkushov, head of Mail.ru’s machine learning group, said the neural network has been trained on thousands of real photos and videos. Thanks to this, the artificial intelligence is able to accurately reconstruct all the elements and give the photos a more modern look.
