ICQ has been part of VK’s assets since 2010. The messenger itself was launched in 1996 and gained popularity in the late 90s with ICQ 98, ICQ 99b, and then more advanced versions – ICQ 2000b, ICQ 2003b and Lite. It was the main messenger in Russia at the turn of the century. It has grown a huge number of third-party clients (among them QIP and Miranda, the latter even survived reincarnation and is now a client for different protocols).

Farewell, ICQ! No more «knock me on my ICQ». By the way, the word «knock» in the context of social networks and messengers also came from ICQ, because there was a knocking sound when someone was added to your contact list. Anyway, it was a legend and it won’t be anymore. It’s a shame that VK couldn’t keep this asset.
