Google has released an update to its Android Auto car system

Google has released an update to its Android Auto 11.0 in-car system, which differs from previous versions in a number of notable visual changes. Most notably, the app icons now adapt to the user’s specific smartphone.

Android Auto 11.0 is the latest version of Android Auto.

In previous versions of Android Auto, all app icons on the car screen were round, but in 11.0 they change their shape depending on the connected phone. For example, with Samsung devices, they take on the trademark barrel shape, and with OPPO/OnePlus devices, they’re square with rounded corners.

It’s also worth noting that Samsung smartphone owners in Android Auto have discovered a change to the icons in the status bar, which now match the One UI. This applies to the battery, cellular network and Wi-Fi indicators. So far, no similar changes have been seen in devices from other manufacturers, but it’s possible that Google will continue to refine the feature.

Also according to information from 9to5Google employees who examined the Android Auto 11 code, the new version will require a smartphone running Android 8.0 Oreo or newer to use. However, as of now – this change has yet to take effect, and the system continues to run Android 7.0 Nougat.

At this point, the new version of Android Auto 11 will require a smartphone running Android 8.0 Oreo or newer.
