Google Photos has moved to Veo 3’s video generator

Google is rolling out a new version of its photo-video generator to its Google Photos app, which is now powered by Veo 3. The technology replaces the previous Veo 2 version, which was used from July 2024.
The app can turn photos into short videos, and with the update, users will get better and more consistent results.
What’s changed in Google Photos
Google Photos originally used Veo 2, a robust but outdated model compared to Veo 3, introduced in May. Now, the app’s functionality has been moved to the more modern version, but its features have been cut back in Google Photos.

Users can only choose ready-made prompts, such as “Easy Motion” or “I’ll get lucky.” You can’t create complex scenarios, such as animating a friend’s photo in the style of a TikTok dance. But the resulting videos will be of noticeably higher quality.

Free access to Veo 3 via Google Photos
The main difference with standard access to Veo 3 is that using the model in Google Photos remains free. In comparison, in the Gemini app, full access to Veo 3 is only available with AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.

In Google Photos, the only restrictions are on the number of generations per day. For AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, the limit is higher, but Google doesn’t specify specific numbers.
Where to find the new feature
The tool is available in the Create Google Photos app. There you’ll also find:
- Remix – convert images into different styles (anime, comics, sketches, 3D animation);
- Collage;
- Highlight video;
- Cinematic photo;
- Animation.
So Google Photos gets one of the most advanced video-generation technologies available, opening up Veo 3 to a wider audience, albeit with simplified management.
