Apple to announce improved features for the Music app at WWDC

We’re counting down the days until June 10, because that’s the day Apple kicks off WWDC 2024, and we’re expecting Apple to show off the new artificial intelligence features it’s adding to iOS 18 and Siri. Many of Apple’s apps will now provide on-screen summaries of content generated by artificial intelligence, and we really hope that when we see the new Siri update, we’ll barely recognize the digital assistant. It’s going to be the most exciting WWDC presentation we’ve ever seen.

Besides useful AI additions to help iPhone users with everyday tasks. What Apple calls «proactive intelligence», we now expect the tech giant to add audio-related features to its audio-centric system apps. According to AppleInsider, people familiar with preview versions of Apple’s operating systems have reported that the company is now internally testing improvements to the «Music» app. In iOS 18, it will get smoother audio transitions and a mysterious «Passthrough» feature.

And that’s not the case.

The «Music» app will have an improved crossfade feature that allows you to better transition from one song to another without gaps of silence. While the current song fades out, the next song fades in. The new, improved version of the feature will be called «smart transitions between songs». The latter will allow users to customize the duration of the transitions effect depending on user preference. The transition can last from one second to twelve seconds.

The Apple Music app will also retain the current version of the crossfade feature, as well as the option to disable it. A new audio feature called «Passthrough» will also be available for the «Music» app and QuickTime. It’s still unclear what the feature is, but AppleInsider claims it could be a new name for the Spatial Audio feature with Dolby Atmos. Spatial Audio is also called surround sound because it allows users to hear where sounds are coming from when watching a video, and it seems as if those sounds are coming from everywhere around the user.

Apple Music subscription is required to use Spatial Audio, but that’s not the case with «Passthrough», which will allow everyone to enjoy Spatial Audio. Passthrough will also be available in QuickTime for those on Macs running macOS 15 or higher.

The report says Apple is working on hands-free gaming and a feature called «Spatial Games». Other improvements to audio accessories such as earbuds and headsets are expected, and those improvements are expected to be focused on gaming.
