At its «Let Loose» event on Tuesday, Apple announced that the M4 chip will appear in the next generation of devices, starting with the iPad Pro. Following rumors of a «real artificial intelligence device», the new OLED iPad Pro will include an updated M4 chip focused on improving the performance of AI-related tasks in iPadOS.

Apple has emphasized the M4’s AI capabilities with a new neural engine that is «an outrageously powerful AI chip». It’s supposedly 60 times faster than the NPU A11, and can rival chips from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.

Apple’s M4 announcement comes less than two weeks before Microsoft holds a special Windows and Surface AI event in Seattle on May 20, where it’s expected to unveil new Arm-based hardware. Microsoft is confident that Windows on Arm will finally be able to surpass Apple’s MacBook Air M3 laptops in both processor performance and AI-accelerated tasks. That’s largely thanks to Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite processors, but given that the M4 chip is already in the new iPad Pro, we may not have to wait long to see how Apple’s new processor compares to the Arm-based laptops coming this summer.
