Nintendo Switch 2: Drag X Drive is a great example of controlling the new Joy-cons

It was expected that Nintendo would use games like Mario Kart World to show off its mouse controllers, rather than create a new IP to be used as a technology demo. But the company introduced Drag X Drive at the very beginning of the showcase. The new sports game is designed specifically to showcase what the new Joy-cons can do with their mouse capabilities and gyroscope integration.

Will this be enough to do what Arms failed to do, and create a whole new series of similar games for Nintendo? Drag X Drive in some ways resembles this console generation’s Arms, acting as a neat piece of technology that’s destined to be short lived. But that’s okay, because the game is great proof that the new Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-cons can do things that no other controller or even a regular mouse can. Its success won’t be measured by how many people play it in a year’s time, but by how many developers it inspires in the meantime.

Drag X Drive — is a three-on-three version of basketball, but the specialty is that the players are in wheelchairs. Each of the Joy-cons is controlled by a separate wheel. To move forward, you have to press both Joy-Cons at the same time. When you need to turn around, you need to gently hook one of the Joy-Cons. At first, it’s not easy to get used to the new controls. The controllers are quite responsive and all, but it’s a little difficult to operate two controllers at once.
Luckily, Drag X Drive — is not a racing game, so the initial controls, didn’t matter. Things become much clearer when the game itself, designed for six players, begins. Here you only have to move in short spurts to rush to the ball and grab it or crash head-on into your opponent to knock the ball out of his hands. These deliberate movements meant more focus could be put on positioning.

A fun detail: the Drag X Drive uses Joy-con’s gyroscopes in tandem with the mouse functions. To make a throw, I have to lift my right hand off the table and make a lying down motion to release the ball. Just as quickly, I can drop it back down on the table and start the motion again. It may seem insignificant, but the fact that Nintendo has found a way to combine several ideas at once, rather than treating them as separate control schemes, is impressive.
Will Drag X Drive become the next great sports game? I don’t think so. In fact, it feels more like a Nintendo Switch Sports mini-game. Unless the game has extra gimmicky areas or additional game modes that Nintendo hasn’t revealed yet, it’s hard to imagine it getting much playtime when new games start coming to the console. It’s definitely a fun time while the Switch 2 is still amassing its library of multiplayer games, but Mario Kart World and an expanded edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree will be far more successful.

The Drag X Drive is probably aimed more at developers, showing them what kind of games they can come up with with the new control options.
