Nintendo resumes testing a mystery MMO game through the Online Playtest Program

Nintendo is bringing back its mystery testing program called Online Playtest Program, which first launched last year. Back then, select Nintendo Switch users were given the opportunity to try out an unnamed MMO game.

“We will be conducting another test as part of the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program,” the company announced on social media. “Starting at 8:00am PT on July 21, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription holders will be able to apply to participate. Seats are limited and the «first-come-first-served» rule applies.”

The call for applications for the second test is now open. Nintendo clarified that the game being tested is the same game that will be available in October 2024. Participation will be available on both the current-gen Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Additions will be available on both the current-gen Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Users who participated in the previous test will also be able to join. This time around, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can apply as an individual or as a group.

Subscribers who participated in the previous test will also be able to join.

Last year, test participants were given instructions and restrictions, including not being allowed to divulge the contents of the test. Nevertheless, images and information about the game were soon leaked online.

This is what the select public test is for on Wed. No, I’m not in it. This is the new info learned just now from the app itself. Which launches but can’t be played yet. Looks like a Nintendo MMO. This is crazy! pic.twitter.com/jnWE7j0VCe

The leaked data indicated that it’s an MMO project where players cooperatively develop a huge planet through creativity and gathered resources. “As you progress through the planet, you’ll find new lands, enemies, and resources needed for your journey,” the description reads.

The screenshots showed Minecraft-inspired gameplay, where special objects called “Beacons” are placed on the planet’s surface – using them to create playable zones. “The higher you place a beacon, the wider the beacon’s area of effect becomes,” the in-game manual explains.

The game also features a separate zone called Dev Core, which is a social hub for communication between players. “In Dev Core, you’ll be able to pump up your character, get items you need, chat with others, and more,” the description adds.
