Electronic Arts has given up on Dead Space 4

The creators of the cult game Dead Space attempted to revive the series by offering Electronic Arts to develop a fourth installment, but were rebuffed.

Glen Schofield, director of the original 2008 game, as well as Bret Robbins (creative director) and Christopher Stone (animation director) talked about their desire to make Dead Space 4 in a recent interview on Dan Allen Gaming.

“We really tried, all three of us wanted to do it,” Stone said.

Scofield clarified that talks with EA took place this year, but the publisher dropped the idea:

“We didn’t go too deep, they just said, ‘No, we’re not interested in that right now. We appreciate your offer, but we have other plans.”

Why EA backed out

Stone said the industry is going through a difficult period right now, with publishers reluctant to take risks:

“Right now, everyone is being conservative. But who knows? Maybe one day we’ll have a chance to get back to that.”

Scofield added that the team has ideas for a new installment, but that the developers respect EA’s decision, which is obviously guided by sales data and the company’s current priorities.

The Motive studio working on the remake originally planned to develop the series further, but those plans were canceled due to weak sales. In April, it was revealed that Motive had joined the development team for Battlefield, and Dead Space was «on pause».

After the release of Dead Space, the company announced that it would be developing a remake of the series.

Hope for the Future

Despite EA’s rejection, the creators haven’t given up hope.

“We all want to return to Dead Space someday,” Stone noted.

While the future of the series remains uncertain, fans continue to hope that Dead Space 4 will one day see the light of day.
