Google will show “The Wizard of Oz” at Sphere Las Vegas with the help of AI

This summer, the classic movie will take an unexpected turn as Google, with the help of artificial intelligence, prepares a large-scale adaptation of The Wizard of Oz for the world’s most technologically advanced venue, the Sphere dome screen in Las Vegas.
Since its opening in 2023, the spherical Sphere concert and media hall has been striking not only for its appearance, but also for its fantastic visual showmanship. Inside is a giant panoramic display covering the audience in 360 degrees. And it is on this unique platform that Google is realizing a project that was previously impossible from either a technical or artistic point of view.
Ii as the wizard
Reimagining “The Wizard of Oz” for a screen of this scale required an unconventional approach. Using conventional computer graphics was deemed inappropriate – the team relied on Google’s Gemini generative AI algorithms. The artificial intelligence was entrusted with the task of adapting the original 4:3 film image to a curved, giant spherical surface. And yet retain the atmosphere, aesthetics and magic of a classic movie.
The project was a real challenge for engineers, artists and developers. It’s not just about remastering – it’s about completely transforming the visual language of the movie for a new, multi-dimensional format.
Premiering this summer
The “Wizard of Oz at Sphere” show is expected to be one of the highlights of the cultural season in Las Vegas. The immersion into the movie will be as spectacular as possible: the audience will literally be “pulled” into the hurricane that sends Dorothy to the fairy tale land, and they will find themselves in the center of the events.
The premiere will take place on August 28, 2025, and according to the announcement, it won’t just be a screening, but an immersive experience in which the past and the future merge through technology.
So far, it’s not just a movie, but an immersive experience in which the past and the future merge through technology.
In the meantime, Google continues to promote the capabilities of its Gemini AI engine. Anyone can try it out now on Android – just activate the voice assistant or try out the visual features in Google’s apps.
